Nelson Wong is an Energy and Mining Analyst within WTW Singapore’s Natural Resources department. He joined our Graduate Program for its strong structure and supportive environment, as well as the opportunity to grow alongside other graduates while taking on meaningful responsibility early in his career.
Choosing WTW’s program
Nelson applied to WTW because the Graduate Program offered a clear structure with strong support from the start. It was clear to him that the company invests in its graduates, providing opportunities not only to learn and grow, but also to contribute meaningfully. He was also drawn to the collaborative culture, where graduates progress together, learn from one another, and are encouraged to step up and take ownership early on.
A culture of openness and collaboration
What stood out most to Nelson when he joined was the culture of openness and collaboration. Colleagues across the business were always willing to share knowledge, offer guidance and support each other. As a graduate, he was pleasantly surprised by how many opportunities were available to take responsibility and be trusted with meaningful work early on, which helped him feel valued and supported from the start.
Developing through exposure and experience
When Nelson first joined the team, he supported colleagues across different stages of the account pipeline, which gave him broad exposure to how the business operates. Over time, his role evolved as he began taking ownership of his own accounts, working directly with clients and markets to support placement processes. This progression allowed him to develop both his technical expertise and his client‑facing skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of the sector.
Staying curious in a changing landscape
What Nelson enjoys most about his role is how dynamic it is. He is not always behind a desk and regularly interacts face to face with clients and markets, making the work both engaging and rewarding. There are constant opportunities to learn, whether through hands-on experience, exposure to different accounts, or working alongside experienced colleagues. At the same time, navigating work that is constantly evolving can be challenging. As markets, clients and risks change, there is always something new to learn, but this continuous change has helped him strengthen his problem-solving skills and refine his approach.
Supported to learn and grow
WTW supported Nelson through professional certifications including Basic Insurance Concepts & Principles Certification, Personal General Insurance Certification and Commercial General Insurance Certification under the Singapore College of Insurance, as well as the The Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute qualifications. These have strengthened his technical knowledge and supported his professional development. Beyond formal training, Nelson benefited from the buddy system, mentorship and bonding events organised by the IMPACT team, volunteer‑led committee that helps colleagues across the Singapore office connect, supports wellbeing and strengthens a sense of community. Having approachable mentors, he could turn to for technical guidance, role advice or career conversations played a key role in his development.
Nelson’s advice to future graduates is to stay curious, ask questions, and step outside your comfort zone. He believes WTW provides a supportive environment and makes the most of it starts with being open to learning and proactive in taking opportunities.
