When Nguyen Duc applied for an internship at WTW, he was looking for an opportunity to learn, grow and better understand where he wanted to build his career. What attracted him most was the opportunity to gain exposure to a global organization while developing practical experience in an industry closely aligned with his studies.
"There were three main reasons that attracted me to WTW," Nguyen explains. "WTW is a globally recognized leader in insurance, risk management and consulting. I was eager to learn in an organization with international standards and gain exposure to industry best practices."
He was also drawn to WTW's highly professional and global working environment, particularly the opportunity to collaborate with experienced professionals and learn how an international organization operates. With an academic background closely related to the insurance industry, the internship program offered the perfect opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world practice while exploring long-term career interests.
Building a career in insurance brokerage
Today, Nguyen works as a Trainee within the Property & Casualty South team, supporting brokers and managers across a range of client servicing and business operations activities. Through his role, he has gained exposure to market research, client engagement processes, policy placement, and cross-functional collaboration, helping him develop a strong understanding of the insurance brokerage business and the value WTW delivers to clients.
As he prepares to transition into an Account Executive role, he is excited about the next stage of his career. "I look forward to taking on greater responsibility in supporting client relationships, coordinating with insurers and internal stakeholders and contributing more directly to the delivery of tailored risk and insurance solutions," he says.
Learning through real-world experience
One of the aspects Nguyen enjoys most about his role is the opportunity to gain hands-on exposure to the insurance brokerage business and better understand the value brokers bring to clients.
Through his day-to-day work, he has developed a deeper understanding of how client needs are identified and assessed before tailored insurance solutions are developed. He has also been able to observe how teams collaborate, navigate market dynamics and deliver solutions that meet clients' objectives.
"What I enjoy most is the opportunity to gain hands-on exposure to the insurance brokerage business and better understand the value that brokers bring to clients," Nguyen says. "Through my daily work, I have been able to learn how client needs are identified and assessed before tailored insurance solutions are developed."
Just as important as the work itself has been the people around him. "My colleagues are always willing to share their knowledge, provide constructive feedback and help me learn every day," he says.
Challenges, support and mentorship
As with any early career journey, Nguyen has faced challenges. One of the most challenging aspects of his role is helping clients understand insurance concepts and solutions, particularly when they have limited prior experience with it. Delivering the best outcomes also requires close collaboration among multiple stakeholders while balancing client expectations, market conditions, and practical considerations. At the same time, the fast-changing nature of the insurance market means continuous learning is essential.
The support available at WTW has played an important role in helping him navigate those challenges. "The biggest support for me in navigating these challenges has been the people and resources available," Nguyen explains. "Whenever I encounter challenges, I rely on my colleagues and managers for guidance."
Mentorship has also been one of the most valuable aspects of his experience. Through the guidance of managers and teammates, he gained a clearer understanding of the broker's role, how different teams collaborate and how the insurance market operates in practice. Regular feedback also helped him strengthen his communication skills, improve his working style and build confidence as he took on new responsibilities.
Lessons learned and advice for future graduates
Looking back on his journey so far, Nguyen says the most valuable lesson he learned was the importance of being proactive.
"In a professional environment, taking initiative to learn, ask questions and look for solutions can significantly accelerate your growth," he says. "Understanding client needs, maintaining a positive attitude and collaborating effectively with colleagues are key factors in building a successful and sustainable career in the insurance industry."
For students and graduates considering an early careers opportunity, his advice is simple: stay curious, proactive, and open to learning.
"You do not need to have all the answers from day one. What matters is your willingness to ask questions, seek feedback and make the most of every learning opportunity available."
