An actuarial career might bring numbers to mind first. But for Geeta Kesaria, Analyst, Actuarial Services in India, the profession is just as much about curiosity, communication and solving business critical problems.

Her journey into actuarial science wasn’t a conventional one. Geeta initially pursued Chartered Accountancy before realizing it wasn’t where her interests lay. A mathematics professor had encouraged her to explore actuarial science from the ninth grade, while she didn't seriously consider the profession initially, it was the combination of mathematics, analytics and real-world problem-solving that eventually drew her toward the profession. " I never imagined that I would build a career in the actuarial profession, but today I feel fortunate to be part of such a dynamic and impactful field."

Looking beyond the numbers

Ask Geeta Kesaria to explain what an actuary does in one sentence, and her answer is clear: “An actuary helps organizations make better decisions by analyzing risk, data and future uncertainties.” But she’s also keen to challenge one of the profession’s common misconceptions.

She says, “A common misconception is that actuaries only work with numbers all day. While technical skills are important, a significant part of the role involves communication, collaboration, and translating complex analyses into actionable insights for clients and stakeholders.”

For her, curiosity, attention to detail, problem-solving and effective communication have all been important. So has the ability to keep learning and adapting as the profession evolves.

Finding variety and collaboration

Geeta shares what she enjoys most about her role. “The opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects while collaborating with talented colleagues across different teams and geographies.”

She adds that it’s rewarding to see how their work helps clients make informed decisions about their benefit programs and financial strategies.

And for anyone considering actuarial science, her advice goes beyond building technical expertise.

“Building strong communication, business, and technology skills will help you grow as a well-rounded actuary. Most importantly, stay curious and embrace challenges because they often create the best learning opportunities.”

Looking ahead, Geeta Kesaria is particularly interested in how technology, advanced analytics and AI are enhancing the profession, giving actuaries greater opportunity to focus on strategic thinking, insights, and decision support.

Where could your curiosity take your career next?

Curiosity brought Geeta to actuarial science. Continuous learning, collaboration and new challenges have kept her moving forward. And with technology, advanced analytics and AI opening new possibilities for the profession, she’s looking ahead.
