After nearly 27 years with WTW, Ellen Federman Conklin recently began a new chapter: retirement. Her journey is not only a story of professional achievement but also of development, reinvention and lasting impact on people and teams around her.
A career that began with storytelling
Ellen’s professional path did not start in consulting, but in journalism.
“My early days as a reporter taught me how to stay calm under pressure and focus on what really matters. You learn quickly how to listen, process information and communicate clearly, even in intense moments.”
Finding purpose at WTW
After completing her MBA, Ellen joined us as a general management consultant, a decision that would shape the rest of her professional journey.
“What drew me in was the opportunity to combine strategy, people and impact,” she says. “I found a space where I could keep learning and make a meaningful difference for clients and colleagues alike.”
Over the years, Ellen worked across industries and business areas. She eventually became a key figure in the growth of our Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) practice. She helped build capabilities, shape strategy and strengthen collaboration across teams and geographies.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how the work we do brings organizations together and helps them move forward,” she reflects.
Leading with clarity and humanity
In an environment often defined by complexity and high stakes, Ellen became known for something just as important as technical expertise: her leadership style.
“In moments of pressure, what people need most is clarity and trust. I have always tried to be someone who listens first, then helps bring focus and direction.”
Her colleagues often turned to her for guidance not only because of her experience but also because of the way she showed up: thoughtful, grounded and generous with her time.
“I have always believed that how we work together matters just as much as what we deliver,” she adds.
A lasting legacy of mentorship
Perhaps the most enduring part of Ellen’s journey is the impact she has had on others.
Throughout her career, she invested deeply in mentoring and developing colleagues at every stage of their careers.
“One of the most meaningful parts of my time here has been helping others grow. Creating a space where people feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and pushing themselves. That is where real development happens.”
Her advice is both simple and powerful:

As Ellen prepares for retirement, she is looking forward to reconnecting with her passions and exploring new possibilities.
“I am excited to spend more time doing the things that energize me, whether that is being on the tennis court or discovering something new. I want this next chapter to be engaging, energizing and full of adventure.”
While she may be stepping away from her day‑to‑day role, the mark she leaves behind on the business, the culture and the people she has worked with will continue to shape WTW for years to come.
