Ivy Malañgen is an Actuarial Valuation Analyst at WTW in the Philippines. She first discovered the company at a university careers fair, where conversations with actuaries introduced her to the retirement practice and sparked her interest in the field.

After joining as an intern, Ivy quickly progressed to a full-time role and was promoted within her first year, reflecting her fast development in the role.

Finding direction in actuarial work

Ivy was initially drawn to WTW by the opportunity to learn more about retirement actuarial work. As she explains, “The retirement path was something I wanted to learn more about.” Through her internship, she gained first-hand insight and a better understanding of what a career in retirement could look like.

Building confidence through hands-on experience

Since joining, Ivy has been involved in actuarial valuations, building her technical knowledge day by day. She values the opportunity to continuously learn, particularly within a specialist area like retirement.

Guidance that makes a difference

Support has been a key part of Ivy’s experience. During her internship, senior colleagues provided guidance that helped her build confidence and develop her skills, contributing to her transition into a full-time role.

WTW has also supported her professional development through actuarial exams, including funding for Exam Probability and Exam Financial Mathematics from Society of Actuaries, helping her progress towards her qualifications.

Flexibility that matters

One of the aspects that stood out to Ivy early on was the flexibility of the work setup. She found this particularly beneficial as a student, allowing her to balance academic responsibilities alongside gaining practical experience.

Combined with an approachable team, this created an environment where she felt comfortable asking questions, learning and developing quickly.

Learning that lasts beyond the role

Reflecting on her experience, Ivy says “The most valuable lesson was to always be transparent”. She believes clear communication, particularly when managing workload or challenges, is key.

She also suggests exploring actuarial exams early, to better understand the process and take advantage of opportunities available to students.
