At WTW, we believe in the power of a supportive and inclusive workplace. Mark Probee’s story is a testament to this belief. Few stories illustrate this better than that of Mark Probee, a former British military professional with 23 years of service who built a second career in our Great Britain Construction segment.

His journey is marked by resilience, determination and the unwavering support of his colleagues. And it reflects exactly what we mean when we say that people matter.

From the military to corporate life

Mark’s career path wasn’t a direct transition from the military to WTW. After leaving the service in 2007, he explored several roles before joining the company more than four and a half years ago.

What immediately impressed him was WTW’s commitment to hiring professionals from diverse backgrounds, especially individuals with military experience, whose discipline, leadership and problem‑solving skills are invaluable in the corporate environment.

“WTW sees real value in military people, which is fantastic. I wasn’t an officer; I was a senior rank in the military. There is so much untapped talent from all levels of the military that could thrive in companies like WTW.”

The power of support in difficult times

In November 2022, Mark underwent major hip replacement surgery on both hips. Through WTW’s private medical cover, he accessed treatment quickly and recovered with full support from his leaders and teammates.

“The support I received from my bosses and colleagues in the construction team was phenomenal. Knowing that I had the backing of my company gave me peace of mind.”

Just a year after his surgery, he challenged himself by competing in the Hyrox fitness event at the Excel Arena in London. Despite the physical demands, he pushed through and even raised sponsorship money toward a military charity.

Facing cancer with strength and community

In May 2024, Mark confronted a new challenge: a prostate cancer diagnosis. Once again, workplace flexibility, health benefits and the encouragement of his team became essential pillars throughout his treatment.

During early 2025, Mark shared that he had begun radiotherapy and hormone therapy. Since then, he has experienced significant progress. A PET scan in September revealed that the radiotherapy successfully cleared nearly all cancerous activity, leaving only a small area in one lymph node still under treatment.

Mark continues with his hormone therapy, including daily medication and scheduled injections, which he expects to complete within the next several months. Although the treatment brings side effects, he remains focused on recovery and optimistic about gradually returning to a more balanced routine.

Throughout this journey, his colleagues have continued to play an essential role.

“My team and leadership have been great and have fully supported me throughout this process, telling me to ‘do what you need to do.’ That support makes all the difference.”

Beyond the physical aspects of treatment, the experience also brought emotional and mental challenges, but knowing he could rely on his team allowed him to focus on his health while staying engaged in his work.

Commitment, contribution and career perspective

Even with the ups and downs of treatment, Mark’s dedication to his role at WTW has never changed. He acknowledges that the medication occasionally affects his memory and focus, but he continues to deliver his best every day.

At this point in his career, he remains committed to contributing meaningfully and using his extensive experience to bring value to the team. He approaches work with gratitude, purpose and a strong sense of responsibility to colleagues and clients.

Reflecting on his journey, Mark says that WTW’s culture of flexibility and care has been instrumental in helping him face one of the most challenging periods of his life.

World Cancer Day: health comes first

Mark leaves a message grounded in his own experience:

  • Stay active and take care of your health: physical and mental strength can make a significant difference during unexpected challenges.
  • Use your preventive health checks:  early detection saves lives.
  • Do it not just for yourself, but also for those who rely on you.

“This disease is indiscriminate. Being in good shape helped me fight it, but the most important thing you can do is get your routine checks. Give yourself the best chance.”

A workplace where people matter

Mark’s story reflects WTW’s belief that people are at the heart of everything we do. His resilience, backed by a supportive workplace, demonstrates how understanding, flexibility and care can make a measurable difference in someone’s life.

“For me, it’s about dealing with life’s challenges with a positive mindset. And knowing that I have a company that supports me makes it all the easier. WTW isn’t just a workplace; it’s a place where people matter.”
