In today’s hiring landscape, resumes are being created faster than ever. AI tools, automated templates and instant rewrites can produce documents that look polished and professional in minutes.

But as automation becomes more common, hiring teams are noticing something important: many resumes now sound similar, detached and impersonal.

That’s why authentic resume tips matter more than ever. The resumes that stand out are not the most refined or keyword-heavy, but the ones that sound human. They reflect real experiences, thoughtful decisions and a clear sense of the person behind the page.

Here at WTW, where we work at the intersection of people, risk and insight, we value clarity, honesty and perspective. Your resume isn’t just a summary of roles: it’s an opportunity to show how you think, learn and contribute.

Why authenticity matters more than a perfect resume

As AI-generated resumes become more widespread, patterns are easy to spot. While the language is generally fluent and well-organized, it frequently lacks precision or substantive detail.  Although achievements may seem impressive, they can often feel detached from their actual context.  This is where the distinction between a real vs fake resume becomes clear.

Authentic resumes don’t aim for perfection. They aim for the truth. They show how someone approached a challenge, made decisions, or learned from experience. This builds trust, which is something automation can’t replicate.

Hiring teams want to understand how you work in real situations, not just what tools you’ve used or outcomes you’ve achieved. Authenticity helps them see that.

As a recruiter, I would always advise candidates to prioritise authenticity over polish. With AI-generated resumes becoming more common, hiring teams are far more focused on credible detail, context, and real examples of decision-making. A resume doesn’t need to be perfect, it needs to be honest and reflective of how you actually work.

How to show real experience (without sounding generic)

Share the story behind the results

Metrics still matter, but numbers alone rarely tell the full story. Instead of listing achievements in isolation, briefly explain the context behind them. What problem were you solving? Why did it matter? What changed because of your contribution?

These details help bring your experience to life and immediately separate your resume from generic or AI-written content.

Use your natural, professional voice

One common trait of AI-generated content is neutrality. Strong resumes, by contrast, sound clear, grounded, and personal. You don’t need dramatic language or clever phrasing, just honest descriptions written in your own professional voice.

If a sentence feels like it could appear on anyone’s resume, rewrite it. Specificity is one of the simplest ways to avoid generic resume templates.

Be intentional, not exhaustive

AI tools encourage endless iteration, but authentic resumes are shaped by choice. Focus on experiences that best reflect your strengths and align with the role you’re pursuing. Thoughtful selection shows self-awareness and purpose, which are qualities that hiring managers' value across all career stages.

Highlight how you work with others

Much of the professional impact happens through collaboration. Whether you worked across teams, supported colleagues or managed complex stakeholder relationships, these experiences add dimensions. They show how you operate in real environments, not ideal ones.
