When you hear that someone has worked at the same company for nearly 40 years, you might picture a life of routine and repetition. But for Bob Pecek, Senior Associate Developer based in Cleveland, Ohio, in North America, his 39-year journey with us has been anything but static. "It doesn't feel like 39 years at the same company because the company and the work have changed so much."
Bob joined in 1986 and spent his first seven years in the Retirement practice. Back then, his work was largely about delivering annual valuations and disclosures to his clients. Pencil and paper supplemented results from a mainframe computer, a far cry from the sophisticated, cloud-based environment of today. "We had these big desk top calculators, and it was all paper files. Now, pretty much everything is online."
His career took a pivotal turn when he moved into the technology side of the business in the early 90’s, as the internet became more of a presence. At the time, most Pension system experts came from the Retirement practice, and there wasn’t a deep bench of tech-specialized talent.
That landscape has shifted significantly over the decades, and Bob has witnessed first-hand how technology at WTW has evolved into a dynamic, innovative domain.
"Working with technology is both interesting and frustrating, but that's what keeps it engaging. You're always learning something new."
Remote before it was mainstream
Long before the pandemic normalized hybrid work, Bob was already enjoying flexibility in his role. Since 2012, he’s worked remotely, collaborating with colleagues from Minneapolis and beyond.
"It’s always been about the results. The focus was never on whether you were in the office, but whether you delivered. That trust and flexibility were crucial."
While the work has changed over the decades, Bob says the people have always made it worthwhile. "I love working with smart, fun people. That makes all the difference," he says. His client relationships have also brought a great sense of purpose and satisfaction to his work.
Now, as he looks ahead to retirement, Bob reflects on how WTW has shaped his life. When asked to pick a word to summarize his journey he chose without hesitation: fulfilling.
"I have learned so much and after 39 years, the people you work with feel like family. Many of them are retiring and you feel that shift."
