Grace Sumarlin is a Marine Hull Broker in WTW Singapore, working closely with clients across the marine sector. She joined WTW’s Graduate Program after gaining early exposure to insurance through an internship, where she saw how the industry plays a key role in supporting businesses and helping them continue to operate and grow.
What drew Grace to WTW
Grace was attracted to our program because of its strong reputation, specialized expertise and the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals. The Marine line of business in particular stood out to her as the right place to develop and grow into a well‑rounded broker.
Where learning feels accessible
When Grace joined the team, she was surprised by how accessible learning felt across the organization. From hands‑on guidance from managers and senior colleagues to opportunities to taking professional exams and certifications, development was always within reach. She also valued the range of networking opportunities and learning resources available, which made continuous growth feel embedded in everyday work.
Going from curious do confidently capable
Grace began her role by supporting renewals, tenders, day‑to‑day servicing and new enquiries while learning from her team. As she progressed, she started taking on more ownership, including leading day‑to‑day servicing for key accounts and playing a larger role in renewals, tenders and new business. She is now more involved in preparing and presenting client data and loss records, particularly for large tenders and new placements, helping her develop both technical confidence and strategic thinking.
Finding purpose in client impact
What Grace enjoys most about her role is knowing that the work genuinely supports clients and helps protect what matters to their businesses. She views insurance not just as a cost, but as an asset that enables companies to operate and grow. One of the more challenging aspects of the role is managing negotiations with multiple stakeholders while balancing different priorities and expectations. While complex, this experience has helped Grace build skills that are essential for her development as a young broker.
Growing with guidance and support
WTW supported Grace through the SCI examinations required to become a licensed broker and continues to encourage further professional development through qualifications such as the Chartered Insurance Institute diploma. Beyond formal training, she values the ongoing guidance and support from her manager and team, who regularly help her work through challenges and build confidence step by step.
Grace’s advice to future graduates is to stay open to learning and not be afraid to step up, even when you feel unsure. She believes WTW provides a supportive environment where graduates are encouraged to take initiative, adapt quickly and grow with confidence in their early careers.
