Senior Underwriting Manager
WTW is seeking a Senior Underwriting Manager to support the continued growth of its Captive Management business in Dublin and across Europe. This role will lead underwriting oversight and strategy across a diverse portfolio of multinational insurance and reinsurance clients. As part of a global advisory, broking, and solutions firm, the successful candidate will work closely with WTW’s risk consulting, broking, and analytics teams to deliver innovative risk financing solutions to clients
The role requires strong technical underwriting capability combined with commercial insight, stakeholder engagement, and familiarity with complex global insurance programs.
The Role
Underwriting Leadership & Portfolio Management
• Lead underwriting governance and oversight for a portfolio of clients under management in Dublin and elsewhere in Europe.
• Assess risk exposures, pricing adequacy, and program structures across the lines of business underwritten by clients.
• Ensure alignment of underwriting activity with each client’s strategic risk financing objectives.
• Review underwriting submissions, limits, retention levels, and policy terms.
• Track and report on underwriting performance, including loss ratios, trends, and portfolio profitability.
Client Advisory & Relationship Management
• Act as a trusted advisor to multinational clients on captive underwriting strategy and optimization.
• Participate in client meetings, board presentations, and underwriting committees.
• Collaborate with WTW broking and consulting teams to deliver integrated client solution
• Support feasibility studies, captive formations, and program redesign initiatives.
Reinsurance & Risk Transfer
• Design, evaluate, and place reinsurance programs in partnership with brokers.
• Negotiate with reinsurers to optimise terms, pricing, and coverage structures.
• Advise clients on risk retention strategies and capital efficiency
Regulatory & Governance
• Ensure underwriting frameworks comply with Central Bank of Ireland requirements and Solvency II.
• Contribute to underwriting policies, risk appetite statements, and governance documentation.
• Involvement in ORSA processes, regulatory reporting, and audits.
• Maintain strong internal controls in line with WTW risk and compliance standards.
Analytics & Insight
• Leverage WTW’s proprietary analytics, benchmarking tools, and actuarial models to inform
underwriting decisions.
• Work closely with actuarial and analytics teams to assess capital modelling, pricing
adequacy, and scenario analysis.
• Deliver data-driven insights to clients to enhance program performance.
Leadership & Team Contribution
• Mentor junior team members and contribute to capability building within the Dublin office.
• Support business development efforts, including proposals and client pitches.
• Contribute to WTW thought leadership in the captive and alternative risk transfer space.
Qualifications
What you’ll bring
Essential
• Relevant years’ underwriting experience within commercial insurance, reinsurance, or captive
insurance.
• Strong understanding of captive insurance structures and multinational program design.• Experience working with large corporate clients and complex risks.
• Knowledge of Solvency II and Irish regulatory environment.
• Strong stakeholder management and presentation experience.
• Commercial awareness with ability to align underwriting decisions to client strategy.
Desirable
• Exposure to WTW-style solutions (e.g., integrated risk, analytics-led underwriting, alternative risk transfer).
• Professional qualifications (ACII, or equivalent).
• Experience with capital modelling and actuarial collaboration.
