The Role

As we expand, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a professional combining underwriting and risk management expertise to join our Malta‑based Captive and Insurance Management team.

The role involved the person assisting in the Underwriting oversight and Risk Management Function for Captives and Insurance Companies under management. The person would be required to provide support to the client Board in underwriting and risk strategy decisions. This position plays a key role in ensuring that client companies operate within their defined risk appetite, comply with Maltese regulatory requirements and are supported by robust underwriting and risk management frameworks.

 

Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for the underwriting and risk management oversight of a portfolio of a captive and/or (re)insurance companies.
  • Responsible for ensuring that client companies under management comply with the Malta Financial Services Authority regulations, Solvency II requirements, the general good provisions of the countries the Company is passporting into and applicable guidelines.
  • Maintaining ongoing relationships with assigned clients and developing a detailed understanding of client business activities, industry exposures and risk profiles.
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for underwriting, claims and risk management queries for allocated clients.
  • Assisting in the production and review of underwriting accounts, including premium analysis, claims experience, IPT returns, budgets and forecasts.
  • Liaising with captive owners, insurers, brokers, reinsurers, actuaries, loss adjusters and risk consultants in relation to underwriting, claims and risk matters.
  • Review of insurance and reinsurance policy wordings, agreements and underwriting documentation, and reporting key matters to client Boards.
  • Providing support to the Risk Management Function to client companies, including: 
    • Assisting with establishing and maintaining risk management policies, systems and procedures.
    • Identifying, assessing and monitoring material and emerging risks.
    • Assist in maintaining an aggregated view of each client’s risk profile.
  • Preparation of regular underwriting and risk management reports for client Board meetings.
  • Coordination and preparation of materials for quarterly client Board meetings, including presentation of underwriting and risk information.
  • Supporting the preparation and ongoing operation of the Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) process, including internal and supervisory reports.
  • Supporting internal audit, compliance reviews and regulatory submissions as required.
  • Cooperating and liaising with other key control functions including Finance, Compliance, Actuarial and Internal Audit.

Qualifications

The Requirements

  • Third‑level degree and/or relevant professional qualification.
  • Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in insurance underwriting, risk management and/or captive insurance management.
  • Experience within a regulated insurance environment is required.
  • Knowledge of the Maltese regulatory environment and Solvency II regime would be a strong advantage.
  • Experience in preparing Board‑level reports and interacting with regulators, auditors and external advisors.
  • Understanding of insurance and reinsurance underwriting principles.
  • Knowledge of enterprise and insurance risk management frameworks.
  • Ability to understand and interpret regulatory and Solvency II requirements.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with Boards of Directors, Management and senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise workloads.
  • Analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Professional outlook with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
