    Celebrating Black History Month: a conversation with Mike Wallace

    Black History Month is a time to reflect, celebrate, and uplift the contributions of Black workers across industries. At WTW, we aim to foster belonging and provide an inclusive space where all colleagues can thrive. 

    To highlight the experiences of our employees, we sat down with Mike Wallace, Associate Director in Voluntary Benefits Middle Market Placement at WTW North America. Mike joined WTW in October of 2024, bringing 25 years of experience in the insurance industry. His mission is to help clients make informed decisions that positively impact employees' lives. 

    To discuss his professional journey, what Black Excellence means to him, and the importance of empowering colleagues through teamwork and a strong community, we asked a few questions to Mike.

    What does Black Excellence mean to you, and how do you embody it in your personal and professional life? 

    To me, Black Excellence means resilience and perseverance - the ability to push through obstacles and achieve success, no matter the challenges. It serves as a reminder that Black professionals can accomplish anything, despite barriers that may exist. 

    In both my personal and professional life, I set goals and find ways to achieve them. If there’s something I’ve never done before, my initial reaction might be, “I don’t know if I can do this, I’ve never done it before.” But then I research, watch a couple of videos to learn, and give it a try.

    Do not be afraid to try it, you will find it may not be as hard as you thought it was.  

    What do you enjoy doing outside of work? 

    I enjoy trying new things, spending time with my family, and relaxing. One of my more recent hobbies is trap shooting, which I introduced to my wife and our youngest daughter—they love it! 

    I also recently took up roller skating, thanks to my wife. I love trying new things, even if it’s just to cross them off my bucket list.  

    Also, my family and I like to travel and explore new experiences.  

    Who has inspired you in your career, and how have they influenced your growth? 

    It’s not just one person - it’s been a combination of people. My wife has always been in my corner, she supports me in everything that I want to do.  
     
    Professionally, I’ve been fortunate to have managers and mentors who saw what I have in me and helped push me.  
     
    Whatever my career goals were and aspirations, they help guide me, giving me feedback. I always listened, took their advice, and by doing so, it helped me get to where I am today. 

    What advice would you give to young Black professionals looking to grow in their careers? 

    There’s a phrase that has been really in the back of my mind as I've traveled this journey of insurance for 25 years: if it was easy, everyone would have it and do it. 

    I started out as a call center representative, and I escalated different professional challenges and levels.  It hasn't been an easy journey, consulting is different, and you will find within the first few years if it is really for you or not. You really have to love people and be passionate about what you do to stay in the industry.  

    But hard work pays off - never give up on your dreams. You can do whatever you put your mind to. There will be bumps in the road along the way, it will not be easy but stay focused and you will get there. 

    Another piece of advice? Ask questions. Early in my career, I hesitated to ask for help, thinking I could figure things out on my own. But I quickly realized that asking questions is how you learn and grow, so don’t be afraid to seek guidance, because mentorship and curiosity will take you far. 

     

    Do you think your journey inspires other colleagues you've known? 

    Yes, absolutely! I have spoken with Black colleagues as well as other colleagues in the industry to help them navigate their struggles.  
      
    In this journey I've seen a lot of folks come and go. And that's where I try to educate them. I try to mentor them, help them in any way that I know, making sure that they get in here and they know what they're getting into. 

    How do you feel supported at WTW, both in your role, work-life balance and as part of the company culture? 

    Even though I’ve only been at WTW for a few months, I feel incredibly supported. 

    During my interview process, my manager emphasized the importance of work-life balance, saying, “If you need to take your child to the doctor, do it. We're adults here.” That flexibility means a lot, especially in a remote work environment. 

    Culture has been great, very warm, everyone with open arms has welcomed me in. For African Americans, there are communities that we can join (which are also open to all colleagues), like the Black Colleague Connection, that provide great opportunities to connect, share experiences, and contribute to a culture of diversity and inclusion. 

    Michael’s journey is a testament to resilience, mentorship, and the power of community. As we celebrate Black History Month, stories like his highlight the importance of fostering inclusion, supporting career growth, and empowering individuals to succeed.
