    Description

    In this role, you will be an Associate Director of the Canadian Affinity actuarial team, overseeing the management of key actuarial and analytical client deliverables, along with an expanding team of actuaries and analysts, delivering best-in-class analyses and results to clients.  Our work primarily relates to lines of business where property & casualty pricing and reserving are necessary foundational elements of our analysis; however, experience in life and health insurance offers incremental added value to certain support activities of our practice. You will also be integrated into a broader team of Affinity consulting professionals where foundational elements of client strategy, customer engagement and operations are complemented by core analytics delivered through the actuarial component of our practice.

    We are a unique practice in the Canadian marketplace that focuses on the development of new insurance solutions, and optimization of existing insurance solutions for Affinity program sponsors.  These programs are targeted at large customer or membership bases of clients whose core business is not always insurance (e.g. banks and other financial institutions, retailers, associations, hospitality providers and others).  Solutions are positioned to be complementary to the core services or product offerings of these Affinity organizations and the associated strategies that they employ to achieve key objectives of customer/member engagement, optimized customer experience, and revenue and business growth. Through our work, we are constantly challenging the market status quo.

    You will be on the front lines of insurance strategy development, product development / enhancement, new business development, and exposed to a variety of lines of insurance business, clients, and unique solutions supporting an ever-evolving marketplace.

    We are seeking an experienced candidate that can bring best-in-class actuarial skills to drive and manage the oversight of deliverables for multiple clients in conjunction with provision of guidance and peer review to team members.  This includes oversight on client projects, hands-on involvement in individual consulting mandates (which may include supporting other senior team members and client leads) and working with various subject matter experts on the team (e.g. product and strategy consultants and research analysts).  The ideal candidate will be familiar with and have experience in personal insurance products including travel insurance, embedded credit card insurance, personal home & auto insurance, and life and health insurance solutions.

    Responsibilities

    • Oversight and management of actuarial professionals;
    • Leading and owning the delivery of actuarial and analytical client analyses of our practice, including but not limited to: Pricing renewals, analysis of excess surplus or profit-sharing arrangements, financial forecasting and scenario modeling, claims analyses, dashboard reporting, industry benchmarking, and other ad hoc analysis;
    • Driving consulting engagements for clients (self-led or in conjunction with other senior staff), including client engagement and touchpoints, project management and oversight, project plans, and ultimate deliverables;
    • Leading dissemination of client analyses, including client presentations, meetings and demonstrations;
    • Analysis and recommendations related to client strategy in conjunction with non-actuarial staff including new product development and/or existing product enhancement assessments;
    • Fostering engagement and development of actuarial staff, including presence and delivery both internally and with clients, coaching, refinement of actuarial skills and completion of actuarial exams;
    • Managing workflows and load balancing across actuarial team members;
    • Maintenance of repositories of industry market knowledge and documentation in conjunction with team members;
    • Identification and implementation of process and efficiency improvements;
    • Support for new business prospecting and development, including development of new client solutions and/or expansion of existing client relationships.

    Qualifications

    Requirements

    • Approximately 10 - 15 years of working experience with background in P&C personal insurance pricing and/or reserving;
    • Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society or the General Insurance track of the Society of Actuaries.  Experienced Associate Actuaries or “near-fellows” will also be considered;
    • Problem solving, critical thinking, negotiation skills, and ability to develop solutions for complex business problems;
    • Ability to communicate results in layman’s terms, both orally and written;
    • Detail oriented, with a high standard of quality control;
    • Previous staff management and/or leading role in overseeing project teams;
    • Pride of ownership and passion for achievement of excellence in all deliverables;
    • Works well in teams, encouraging other team members and adapting to diverse perspectives;
    • Demonstrates strong listening skills;
    • Exhibits positive attitude and demonstrates integrity in all interactions;
    • Strong work ethic, including ability to show initiative, manage multiple priorities, honour timely client commitments and manage time efficiently and effectively;
    • Skilled in the Microsoft suite, most particularly with Excel.

    • Past consulting and/or Affinity experience;
    • Experience with “R” and PowerBI;
    • Experience with business development and new business generation activities;
